HONG KONG – Shares in China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd. plunged Thursday after Beijing rejected Coca-Cola Co.'s US$2.4 billion bid for the juice maker.
Huiyuan's shares fell by as much as 53% to a low of HK$3.88 in early trading. The stock resumed trade Thursday after being suspended early Wednesday. The benchmark Hang Seng Index was down 1%.
Analysts said the sharp fall in Huiyuan's share price was expected as it has doubled since early September, after the U.S. beverage giant offered HK$12.20 in cash for each of the juice maker's Hong Kong-listed shares.
China's Ministry of Commerce Wednesday rejected Coca-Cola's bid to acquire Huiyuan, one of China's largest juice makers, saying the deal would hurt competition.
